4 Fun and Warm Weather Carolina Activities
As winter winds down, you may start feeling a little stir-crazy. Something about the arrival of spring makes you want to get out and do something, even if the temperatures still resemble winter more than summer. Fortunately, there are several springtime activities in North Carolina that are both fun and warm. Here are four examples.
Indoor Water Parks
A water park might not sound like the best idea in early spring, but North Carolina boasts more than one indoor water park with heated pools. Ray’s Splash Planet is located right here in Charlotte on the campus of Irwin Avenue Open Elementary School. In addition to a lazy river and a three-story water slide, it offers courts for water volleyball and basketball. The Great Wolf Lodge, a resort in Concord, features a water park with three swimming pools, 12 water slides, a four-story tree house — and, best of all, water heated to 84 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you are looking for a more luxurious experience, the 3-hour drive to Hot Springs, North Carolina, might be worthwhile. Naturally heated mineral springs are difficult to come by on the East Coast, and only two can be considered “hot springs.” The Hot Springs Resort and Spa marks the location of one, piping the hot mineral spring water into modern-day Jacuzzi tubs for its guests. The water itself is known for its healing properties, and the spa offers services to enhance the already-relaxing experience of soaking in it.
Sure, you could rent a movie or go to any old theater, but if winter has left you tired of being cooped up indoors, a drive-in movie may be the perfect solution. You’ll be closer to the outdoors, but still nice and cozy inside your car. About an hour outside Charlotte in Albemarle sits the historic Badin Road Drive-In Theater, which should reopen in May. The Sunset Drive-In, also about an hour away in Shelby, plans to reopen in April. If you have the means and motivation, you can also set up your own DIY outdoor movie theater when you like.
Although ballets and symphonies are nice, a good laugh is a better way to break free of the winter blues, stay warm, and embrace spring. For some guaranteed giggles, head to the Comedy Zone in Charlotte. They host various celebrity comedians throughout the year, along with a variety of other events. A few events on the calendar for March include a stand-up comedy tournament, a “Comedians Cook Off” and “Funny on the Fly,” a stand-up competition in which local comedians are given seven topics and only 30 minutes to prepare. For more hands-on fun, you can even take a stand-up comedy course yourself.
The best part is that those are only four examples. If you look, you’ll have no problem finding a host of other activities that allow you to have fun and stay warm at the same time. Welcome spring by unleashing your inner kid, treating yourself to some pampering, or stepping outside your comfort zone.
