Spring Break Getaways

From the beaches to the mountains, North Carolina offers something uniquely fun for everyone. Whether you live here and you’re looking for an adventure close to home, or you live outside the state and you’d like to visit during your spring break, check out a few of these fun getaways.

Situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina, Asheville is a small and funky city with a thriving arts scene and delicious food scene. When you’re done exploring the city, head out to The Biltmore, which is the largest private estate in the country. Take a tour through the house, and marvel at the amazing architecture, artwork, and more. The surrounding mountains also offer plenty of outdoor activities, including hiking, rock climbing, and zip lining.

Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is a 200-mile long barrier island on the coast of North Carolina. With so many towns and attractions, it might seem impossible to do and see everything in just one vacation. The northern part is home to the famous Corolla Wild Horses and the one-of-a-kind shopping in the tiny town of Duck. Adventure lovers will enjoy Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head. Here you can hike to the top of the tallest natural sand dunes on the East Coast. It’s also one of the best spots to take a hang gliding lesson.

Lake Lure

Lake Lure is famous as a filming location for movies such as My Fellow Americans and Dirty Dancing. However, the number one reason most people come to visit the 720-acre lake is to enjoy the sparkling waters. Here, you can take part in a variety of activities, including fishing, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, and boating. Even if you don’t spend time on the water, there are many other outdoor activities to keep you busy. Enjoy a picnic or take a horseback ride through the mountains. Or, take a short drive out to Chimney Rock and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

As the largest city in North Carolina, Charlotte has plenty of exciting activities to offer those on spring break. Enjoy thrill rides, shows, and attractions at the Carowinds amusement park. Or, learn something new at one of the city’s premier museums, such as Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Discovery Place, or the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Bald Head Island

If you truly want to relax during your spring break, take a trip to Bald Head Island. The only way to get to this island just south of Wilmington is by passenger ferry. Once there, the only transportation around the island is by bike, golf cart, or your own two feet. This gives the community a relaxed and laid-back feeling. You can take a hike along the nature trails, kayak in the creeks, or try a couple of rounds on the seaside golf course. Or, you can simply sit back and unwind along the 14 miles of beautiful beaches.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing time on the beach or an adventure in the mountains, these fun destinations in North Carolina are sure to make your spring break enjoyable.
